Regarding The Acord-Wheatley House. Excerpt from the National Register nomination:
The John Acord House is significant as a good example of the vernacular residential types built of artificial stone in Artesia soon after the founding of the town.
The original owner of the property on which the house stands was Earl McBride who acquired the property in 1904. In 1905, he sold the two lots to Eugene Walker who, in 1906, sold them to Claire Williamson for $300.
In 1908, John Acord purchased the property and erected the house. According to local tradition, Joe A. Clayton was the building contractor. John Acord was a grocer. In 1919, he sold the property to E. S. Shattuck, a cattleman. In 1925, Rex Wheatley, manager of the Joyce-Pruit Company Store (largest merchandise store in town) acquired the house.
