Frans Hemsterhuis 1721-1790

(feeling), he was impressed by both the scientist Newton and the philosopher Spinoza. Hemsterhuis reflected on the meaning of life and tried to objectively determine what beauty means. He wrote in French, the language of the elite at the time, and was therefore able to count on international interest. From 1755 to 1780 he held the position of Secretary of the Council of State. He also designed the grave monument for physician Herman Boerhaave, which was placed in the Pieterskerk in Leiden in 1762.
