Regarding Ted Lyons. After graduating from Baylor University, Ted Lyons, a native of Lake Charles, Louisiana, signed with the Chicago White Sox and was promoted immediately to the majors, never appearing in a minor league game. Lyons spent 21 seasons as a player with the White Sox, emerging as one of the great pitchers of his time, and three more as the club's manager. For the White Sox organization, he was a link between its tragic past--some of his first teammates had been "clean" members of the 1919 "Black Sox"--and the "Go-Go White Sox” that would put up memorable seasons in the 1950s.

Later in his career, Lyons developed a knuckleball, a pitch that became his primary pitch during the final years of

his career. From 1939 through 1942, Lyons earned the moniker "Sunday Teddy," as he only pitched on Sundays--the exact reason why lost to history, but potentially as a gate attraction to sell more tickets, or perhaps to preserve his arm as he entered his 40s. It culminated in 1942 when the 41-year-old Lyons started 20 games and threw complete games in each one, finishing with the league's best earned-run average.

In 1943, the 42-year-old Lyons enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps even though he was exempt from the draft due to his age, and he fought in the Pacific. He returned to pitch five games in 1946 before retiring. Lyons was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 1955.
