Inscription. The New Avon Salem United Methodist Church, originally called the Evangelical Association, was organized May 18, 1896 during a meeting in the Louie Beyer home in New Avon Township. There were about 40 charter members and services were conducted in German for many years. A few months after organization, the congregation built a church building on land secured for the price of $1.00 from Gotlib and Rosa Hauptli.

At New Avon were the pioneer families of Beyer, Bill, Buerger, Dahms, Datwyler, Fritz, Georgius, Grundt, Hauptli, Heath, Lindeman, Luescher, Murset, Reinke, Richert, Stassen, Weber, Werder. There was still a remnant of these original families attending church here at New Avon Salem in 2002.

The principle characteristics of this new church were true repentence, thorough conversions, and holy living. Its members were known for their integrity, honesty and wholehearted hospitality.
