A radio operator and aerial machine gunner qualified as an M1 Carbine Sharpshooter flying the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress out of RAF Polebrook, Northamptonshire, England, Bill was awarded the Air Medal for "Meritorious Achievement six times for "courage, coolness and skill displayed during bombing raids on enemy Installations in the Rhineland.
