Inscription. Mystery in ruins On December 17, 1853 – almost 175 years after the Tompiros and Franciscans left – a U.S. Army expedition came upon Abó. Their leader, Major James H. Carleton, wrote:
In the mystery that envelops everything connected with these ruins … there is much food for very interesting speculation. Until that mystery is penetrated … Abó belongs to the region of romance and fancy; and it will be for the poet and the painter to restore to its original beauty this venerable temple …

Ruinas misteriosas El 17 de diciembre de 1853 – casi 175 años después de que se fueron los tompiros y franciscanos – una expedición del ejército estadounidense llegó a Abó. El comandante James H. Carleton escribió:
En el misterio que envuelve todo aquello conectado con las ruinas … hay mucho alimento para una interesantísima especulación. Hasta que ese misterio sea penetrado … Abó pertenece al campo del romance y la fantasía; y serán el poeta y el pintor los que devuelvan su belleza original a este templo venerable …
