1. "Readin', Writin' & Rithmatic" Marker
Inscription.
"Readin', Writin' and Rithmatic". . Everybody remembers their own teachers, but names like Cerkvenik, Olness, Olstlund and Wallin were special to our WHS Class of 1949 and their teachings have been preserved in our hearts and minds throughout our lives. In 1896 our predecessors attended school in the Court House, which was located on Main Street. In 1906, a permanent building was constructed where the school is now. In 1936, the WPA built an addition, which opened the year our class started Kindergarten. Another addition was built in 1950 and the original building was destroyed by a fire in 1965. In the 1990s, a trend toward consolidation resulted in the school being joined by Hackensack and Akeley, and the Walker Warriors became the Wolves from WHA! Its new curriculum included an Indian Education Program and a Community Education Program. Walker also boasts an Immanuel Lutheran Elementary School south of town. ,
