first appeared on August 31, 1940, Queen Wilhelmina's birthday. There was too little non-pro-German reporting and 'the Dutch feel the need for a truly Dutch newspaper' was stated in the first issue. All members of Van Rij's resistance group were arrested after betrayal in the first half of 1941 and transferred to the Oranjehotel, the prison in Scheveningen. Ultimately, eleven of the twenty-eight members of the group did not survive the war. Van Rij was in the correctional center in Sieburg and survived. In 1949 he investigated Dutch military brutality in the Dutch East Indies. The government did not make its conclusions public. It was not until 1968 that Van Rij's report came to light.
