Willem Moll 1812-1879

laid the foundation for modern church history. After studying in Leiden, he was a reformed minister at the Lage Vuursche and in Arnhem. In 1846 he was appointed professor of theology and church history at the Athenaeum Illustre, the predecessor of the University of Amsterdam. From 1853 to 1868 he led the Association for the Practice of Theology History of the Christian Church. The students who were affiliated with this association played an important role in the development of Dutch church history, and in getting historians to take the subject seriously. Moll is the author of the two-volume Church History of Netherlands before the Reformation, that is the period covering the early part of the 11th century to the first half of the 16th century.
