Regarding Villa Mathias. E.J. Marchant was a prolific builder in Albuquerque and New Mexico. Among his projects were the New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell; as well as the Veterans Administration Hospital; the Harwood School; the Castle and Eller apartment buildings; and the University of New Mexico's first library (now the Art Annex) in Albuquerque. The Villa Mathias complex is named for Brother Mathias Barrett, who – at the direction of then-Archbishop Edwin V. Byrne – founded the Good Shepherd Refuge on January 19, 1951. It is the oldest continuously operating homeless shelter in Albuquerque.
