This plaza is dedicated in loving memory of

Zahur-ul-Haqq

Zahur-ul-Haqq is recognized as the first convert of the Methodist mission in India. Born in Tilhar, India, in 1834, Haqq was raised in a prominent Muslim family and practiced Islam until 1854 when he heard the gospel preached on the streets of Bareilly. His heart was immediately turned towards Jesus Christ. As a new believer, he began attending church and studying the Christian doctrines. On July 24, 1859, a number of English and Indian people attended a baptismal service to witness the extraordinary sight of this former Muslim publicly and courageously commit himself to be a follower of Christ.

Haqq began anew, working as a teacher in the mission school. Over the next two decades, he went on to serve as a teacher, preacher and reverend in several parts of northern India -- ultimately serving in the Amroha District, the central point for 146 villages with nearly 1,500 Christians. In 1882, he became the first Indian Presiding Elder. He continued working to spread the gospel throughout India, and saw the number of Christians grow to nearly 50,000 in the four districts in which he worked as an elder.

Zahur-ul-Haqq died in July 1896, but his legacy continued through the work of his five sons and four daughters. Three of his sons served the Lord with great passion as pastors of churches in Delhi, Meerut and Moradabad.
