Oskaloosa in Mahaska County, Iowa — The American Midwest (Upper Plains)
Mahaska County Courthouse
1886
— Architecture: Victorian Romanesque —
• The Building was completed in 1886 at a cost of $132,158. It was dedicated by John F. Lacey, Oskaloosa Congressman and founder of the National Parks System.
• In 1916, the Courthouse was painted gray at a cost of $1,009. Years later the paint would all be removed exposing the beautiful red brick and white foundation that you see today.
• In 1918, a 1,200-pound weight from the tower clock broke loose and crashed through the third-floor ceiling, shattering two stone steps. These steps were replaced with the wooden ones found there today.
• In 1934, the original ornamental gabled entryway was removed and the two large columns from this entryway now adorn a private residence in Oskaloosa (1215 C Avenue West).
• The Courthouse was the site of the famous "shotgun trap" trial in the case Katko v. Briney, which made it to the Iowa Supreme Court in 1971, garnering national media attention and becoming a staple of law school classes across the country
