1. Mountain Station Marker
Inscription.
Mountain Station was constructed by the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad in 1915. The station building and shelter are fine examples of the Renaissance Revival style, which was commonly assimilated into the designs for the station stops along the D. L. & W. in New Jersey. The station exemplifies the style with its sound arch opening, case stone trim, strong horizontal and rusticated brick laid with deep joints to give the appearance of massiveness. Also associated with the style of the station is the crafted quality of the detailing such as the cast iron lighting fixtures and the Spanish roof tiles. Designed by the architect for the D. L & W., Frank J. Nies, the station building and shelter are particularly notable for being incorporated into the surrounding topography, the station and building are extraordinarily well-sited. Mountain Station was built when the Morris & Essex Division of the D. L. & W. was responding to the demand from commuters in the towns west of Newark by expanding the railroad's service to include passengers in addition to the shipment of anthracite coal on the Boonton Branch (now NJ Transit's Boonton Line). Stations were designed individually to blend with their surroundings by order of William Haynes Truesdale, then-President of the railroad. grade crossing elimination project by the railroad through the Oranges. Mountain Station was listed on both the State and National Registers of Historic Places in 1984.
