Ice was cut using a saw and floated to a collection point. It was then packed in layers of sawdust for insulation in a nearby icehouse. The stored ice supply normally lasted through August or September. Ice was also shipped on canal boats down to Cincinnati throughout the summer to supply hotels and breweries.
