Roland T. Bird - Dinosaur Hunter
The dinosaur tracks that he found here sent shockwaves through the scientific world. There were hundreds of massive, saucer-shaped sauropod tracks - the first ever identified, together with numerous three-toed theropod tracks buried just beneath the Paluxy River. Based on this find, R.T. Bird developed the theory that sauropods walked on land.
A Painstaking Job
It took R.T. Bird and his crew two years to excavate these ancient dinosaur tracks. Using sandbags to hold back the river, he chiseled the trackways out of the bedrock, broke them into pieces, carefully cataloged each one, and then wrapped them in plaster-coated burlap for safe transport to New York.

The Main Crossing - This is an eroded section of limestone that contains only a few sauropod tracks. Be careful if you walk across the river while water is flowing, as the concrete roadbed is very slippery from algae growth. The mud swells of a few sauropod tracks rise above the sand on the east bank of the river just north of the roadbed.(Submitted on November 19, 2023, by James Hulse of Medina, Texas.)
