Inscription.

The multi-talented Ernest Blumenschein was arguably the most nationally prominent member of the Taos art colony during his lifetime. He studied painting at The Art Students League in New York and later at the Académie Julian in Paris where he met Bert Phillips and Joseph Sharp. After returning to New York, he and Phillips embarked on a wagon trip from Colorado to Mexico. A broken wheel forced the pair to halt their adventure in Taos. Blumenschein returned to Paris and later to New York where he resumed his highly successful career as an illustrator. Although he visited Taos on a regular basis, it wasn't until 1919 that he moved here permanently. Blumenschein was an exacting artist often repainting canvases after several years had passed. As a result of his high standards, only his best work survives to this day.
