L. "N.L." Rosenthal (1830-) emigrated from his native Prussia to New York in 1864. He gradually moved westward, arriving in Las Vegas in 1879 and opening the first store in the new town. He was an organizer and director of San Miguel Bank, a city school board member and president of Congregation Montefiore, the first Jewish congregation in New Mexico. His three sons – Charles, Samuel and William – were associated with his wholesale and retail business until 1885, when they opened their own store using capital supplied by their father.
