Ralph enlisted at Syracuse, New York, 23 June 1941; and, from Parris Island he was posted to guard one of the largest ammunition depots in the world. He later asked for and received a transfer to the Fleet Marine Forces Pacific where he fought in battles at Guadalcanal, Tarawa and finally Salpan where he was Killed-in-Action, 15 June 1944.
