After completing Basic Training at MCRD followed by Advanced Infantry Training at MCB Camp Lejeune, NC where he qualified as an Expert Rifleman, Tom was transferred back to Parris Island as a Senior Programmer assigned to Data Processing Installation (DPD) 811. While there be designed, coded and implemented an Automated Civilian Payroll System for many facilities including MCRD Parris Island, Beaufort Naval Hospital and Marine Corps Air Station, Beaufort, SC. In 1971 he was awarded a Certificate of Commendation from the Commanding General for outstanding performance of duty.
