• In 1954, SLI became the first all-white, state supported public college in the South to enroll a black student. It was permanently integrated in 1956. The first African-American Graduate was Christiana G. Smith.
• SLI obtained one of its first computers.
• Campus grew with the addition of more than a dozen buildings.
