SLI became The University of Southwestern Louisiana on July 27, 1960,
1960 enrollment 4910-number of faculty 315.
USL adopted the nickname "Ragin' Cajuns" for its athletic teams.
President Joel L. Fletcher Resigned in October 1965.
Clyde R Rougeou was named president of USL in 1966.
In 1968, USL received approval from the State Board of Education to grant doctor of philosophy degrees in biology, English, history, microbiology and mathematics.
