1. Joshua Mountain and Early Settlers Marker
Inscription.
If you look along Main Street, you can see the twin peaks of Joshua Mountain rising south in the distance. In the early days of "the settlement " several families made their home by the banks of the river, in the shadow of Joshua. Some farmed and others had a trade, such as wagonmaking. The Owen family operated a trading post, and Joshua Bryant operated a boarding house. Glazener, Whitmire, Paxton, and Galloway were some other names that made up the settlement.

The story is told that one day Joshua Bryant was hunting on the mountain and shot a deer. When he went to finish it off, the deer jumped up and ran away. Determined not to lose the meat for his family, Joshua grabbed hold of the animal. It proceeded to drag him down the mountain until it finally shook him off. Battered and bruised, Joshua returned home empty-handed. His neighbors were so amused by the incident, they started calling the mountain "Joshua's Mountain." And so it stands.
