Inscription. The cluster of oak trees at this rest spot are representative of the trees that gave Oakwood Lakes its name. In 1870, Samuel "Spot" Mortimer, sold oak trees from his land to other settlers for building their homes. Oak logs were prized for their durability. Some of the oaks were said to be three feet in diameter.

Bur Oak

Most of the remaining oak trees in the park are second and third generation trees. The bur oak is easily recognized by its large, deeply indented leaves and rough bark. In the fall, acorns borne in one-half inch deep protective cups are abundant. Examine one of the cups with an acorn in it and note the fringed edge. Does it have a mossy appearance? Some people call it "mossy cup oak". The acorns attract deer, raccoons, squirrels and other animals. (Marker Number 6.)
