Hotel Alexandra
The prestigious Hotel Alexandra faces one of the most famous streets of the Capital, as well as main axis of the modern Ludovisi district, established at the end of the Nineteenth century on the Villa bearing the same name. The prerogative of exclusive area has distinguished it since the ancient times. As a matter of fact it was intented for the rich middle class and for the most well-known representatives of the Roman magistracy. At the end of the Sixteenth century the Casino dell'Aurora (frescoed by Guercino) was built, subsequently alienated in favour of the Cardinal Ludovico Ludovisi and incorporated in the boundaries of Villa Orsini, where the first nucleus of the wonderful Villa Ludovisi originated from. In 1622, the Cardinal Ludovico promoted his residence after the model of the Villa of Pope Sisto V (also destroyed, it rose above the Esquilino in the place of the today's Stazione Termini), and created one of the most celebrated parks in Rome. Writers, travellers and artists who had the opportunity to visit the Villa, remember it as one of the most fascinating places in the eternal city and its garden as one of the most beautiful in the world. The area deeply changed after the Unity of Italy, when the Villa was alienated and divided into lots, the wonderful
park around it was dismembered and many buildings were demolished to make room for the urban tissue of the new district and to the opening of Via Veneto, afterwards remembered for the famous people who usually went around there in the '60. At the same time of the realization of the district, the construction of representative buildings and fashionable hotels was carried out, they became the distinguishing feature of the whole area. In this prestigious context at the end of the Nineteenth century, the building of the today's Hotel Alexandra was built; it has been managed by the same family since 1910. Still today the hotel is characterized by the glamour of a tradition left unchanged, the careful restoration works have preserved the refined style and the original decorations of the rooms, even if enriched with all modern comforts. The four-storey building is characterized by a harmonious façade, whose distinctive element is the refined stucco decoration of the windows cornices, where floreal patterns alternate with acanthus leaves and manly heads. The projecting cornice - decorated with classical brackets and dentils - is subtended by a low relief fascia interrupted by the smaller windows on the last floor, laterally enclosed among pilaster strips with flowered sprays. Today, the modern canopy replaces the original one in liberty style, dating back to the 1909. The taste of the structure and the reservedness of the place find at least an excellent finishing in the elegant gazebo in front of the hotel, where, in the shadow of the plane trees of the famous street, the Alex Cafe is located.
