Flemington in Taylor County, West Virginia — The American South (Appalachia)
West Virginia College
Opened on this site in 1865 by Free Will Baptists led by local resident Rev. F. J. Cather. Chartered by the legislature June 26, 1868. Rev. A.D. Williams became the first president and served until 1870 when he resigned to become Superintendent of Free Schools in West Virginia. It functioned into the 1890s when reduced enrollments forced its closing. Building served Flemington High School until razed in 1950s.
Erected 1982 by West Virginia Department of Culture and History.
