On an early April morning in 1992, the last thing Caroline Monson expected to see as she climbed the Pequot Lakes Fire Tower to begin her fire-watching shift was a large black bear. The bear, which was being kept as a pet by Pequot Lakes Police Chief Mark Forsberg, had gotten out of its cage and wandered off that morning. "Sassy" the bear had climbed almost all the way up to the top of the tower when encountered by Ranger Monson. Chief Forsberg was out of town, so Lynn Forsberg was called, and she knew just what to do: she supplied DNR Conservation officer Dave Mick with marshmallows, so he could lure Sassy down and back to her cage.

The Pequot Lakes Fire Tower was listed on the National Historic Lookout Tower register in 1993.

Over the course of six decades, dedicated professionals from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources climbed the Pequot Lakes Fire Tower in their effort to protect the lives and property of residents and visitors to the Pequot Lakes area.

We will always be grateful for their service!
