Inscription.
Built in 1901, this mill house was the first Olympia School. Within two months of opening, the school attendance jumped from 30 to 75 students, and it continued to grow. It was open from 1901 until 1909, when a new brick school was built nearby.

In March 1905, Principal Mamie Boozer described the school grounds. She listed a woven wire fence, and the front yard filled with flower beds, mostly created by the children. A tall flag pole waved a "beautiful" United States flag in front of the school, and swings were on both sides of the building. In the rear and side yards the students played football, baseball, tennis and jump-rope. She believed in recess, so they could educate the children's bodies as well as their minds.

Notice the trolley car track in the road in the picture at the top right corner. What other differences are there between the building's appearance in these historic photos and now? What is the same?
