The 1931 Anthony Wayne Bridge is truly an engineering wonder. Designed by Waddell & Hardesty, it was constructed for 2.6 million dollars by the McClintic-Marshall Company and was the first U.S. bridge to use deep, riveted plate girder spans.

Called a suspension bridge for how it carries loads, its total length is 3,218 feet and it uses vertical steel ropes to transfer its weight and that of its traffic to long, steel cables. Those suspension cables are draped over two bridge towers reaching 201 feet high and are attached to large concrete anchoring blocks on each shore. It's roadway soars 106 feet above the river to allow lake freighters to pass below. This bridge was named a Historic Civil Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Civil Engineers, Toledo Section, in 2022.

There are 3534 parallel steel wires in each of the two main cables that support the 60 foot-wide roadway deck.

The name for this bridge instigated heated political debate in its early years. Some wanted to call it Warren Gamaliel Harding Memorial Bridge, while others vied for Toledo High Level Bridge. All finally accepted its name, Anthony Wayne Bridge-which has remained its official title to this day.

The Anthony Wayne Bridge, commonly called simply the High Level Bridge, is Toledo's only historic high level bridge, and it is a defining landmark for the city. Toledo has other Maumee River crossings, some of which are historic, but they are low level crossings with movable spans to provide for navigation.

This impressive bridge was constructed in 1931. The superstructure of this bridge was built by the McClintic-Marshall Company, which is the same company that built the Ambassador Bridge in Detroit. Waddell and Hardesty were consulting engineers for the Anthony Wayne Bridge.
