Pomeroy and Newark Rail Line Facts
⇒ Rail service between Pomeroy, PA and Newark, DE began in May of 1873.

⇒ The rail line between Newark and Pomeroy included 65 bridges. It follows the bank of the White Clay Creek crossing and re-crossing the creek and surrounding wetlands.

⇒ The 3.87 mile segment from the Delaware state line to Newark was abandoned in 1939.

⇒ During its busiest years, commodities such as fuel oil, coal and wood pulp were delivered to Newark. Paper, canned goods, fiber, clay and other less abundant products were shipped out of Newark.

⇒ The passenger car for the rail line was fondly known as "The Pumpsie Doodle".

⇒ Passenger service was discontinued in 1928.

The Pennsylvania, Wilmington, and Baltimore Railroad established service through Newark in 1837, constructing tracks about a mile south of town. The train station (located on South College Avenue) was built in 1877 to serve passengers along this line.

In 1886, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad laid tracks through Newark. This station (located on Elkton Road) was built soon after to provide passenger services. This line still

Newark Center Station served passengers along the Pomeroy and Newark Railroad. This station was located on Main Street, where you are currently standing. It stood as the southern terminus of the Pomeroy and Newark Line. Photo circa 1900.
