Development of Old Oakville's commercial district started at Sixteen Mile Creek and grew east along Lakeshore Road (then known as Colborne Street) to Trafalgar Road. Owners and their families frequently lived above their businesses. The area east of Trafalgar Road was primarily residential until the boom of the 1950s.
