Derwin was qualified as a Rifle Marksman, Pistol Sharpshooter and Aerial Navigator. He flew missions aboard a Curtiss R5C-1 Commando transport aircraft ferrying wounded between Pacific islands during the Iwo Jima and Okinawa Operations from February to November 1945.
