Inscription.

The Minneapolis Mercantile Company was located on the corner of Lake Street and Colfax Avenue, and offered groceries, meats, and baked goods to area residents. Constructed in 1916, the building housed both the Sandberg family business as well as three generations of the Sandberg family in the apartments above the store. By the early 1960s, the building became home to the Padded Cell, known for its charburgers and experimental jazz. Musical notables such as Peter, Paul, and Mary, and Peter Nero played at the Cell. The folk trio The Journeymen recorded their "Coming Attraction—Live!" here in 1962, and the album cover enthusiastically described an "on-the-spot recording of an actual performance in Minneapolis' famed Padded Cell." In 1969, Carroll Mohn moved his appliance company from Hennepin Avenue to this location.
