More about this memorial. Bataan Park honors the unique toll that the Bataan Death March had on this suburban area west of Chicago. In 1940, 122 men from the Illinois National Guard Armory in Maywood were deployed to the Philippines after Pearl Harbor as part of a U.S. tank division. 2. Veterans Park District Marker

was across from Proviso Township High School (now Proviso East), whose student body includes Melrose Park residents. Only about one-third of the area men who were sent to the Philippines made it back home.
