Port Sanilac Light Station - 1886
Built in 1886 by the US Lighthouse Establishment
First lit October 20, 1886 as a fixed-white light
4th Order Fresnel lens fueled by kerosene, visible 15 statue miles
Octagonal brick tower has a focal plane of 52 feet above the ground and is 69 feet above lake level
1889 the light was changed to fixed-red by use of a ruby glass chimney
The light was electrified in 1924
The light characteristic was changed to flashing-white in 1925
The light was automated in 1927
Dwelling and grounds sold at government auction in 1928 and has been privately owned ever since.
Tower sold to original family heirs in 2000
December 2014 sold to the second owner, the Shook's
Major restoration project of the entire light station 2015-2016

Characterized by shallow water and sandbanks, the 75-mile (121 km) stretch of coastline between the Fort Gratiot Light and Pointe aux Barques Light is a hazard to navigation. Even after the establishment of the Sand Beach Harbor of Refuge Light in 1875, 30 miles (48 km) of coast line still remained completely unlit.(Submitted on January 12, 2024, by J.T. Eighteen years after the first attempts to get congressional funding,[13] the station was established and first lit in 1886. This Lake Huron lighthouse is 30 miles (48 km) north of the Fort Gratiot Lighthouse (Michigan's oldest) in Port Huron, Michigan.
