Edward Prince Danforth
An eye surgeon, Major Danforth was a Captain in the Army Reserve Medical Corps until called to active duty. During the war and surviving the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941, he was on staff caring for the wounded at Tripler Army General Hospital in Honolulu. He later participated in the invasion of Leyte in the Philippines. In a letter home be said, "Landed under mortar fire, bombing and strafing Sleep in the mud and wet clothes with no chance of a bath. Operate with my boots on and am amazed at the sterile techniques which can be maintained. The worst is over and looks as though the dust is rapidly settling. Just saw a cobra killed which was found under a box in the laboratory!"
