Inscription.
Gunner's Mate 2nd Class, U. S. Navy - World War II
USS LST-577

On February 11, 1945, Chester was rescued when his ship was lost in action off the coast of the Philippines while returning to reinforce the Lingayen Gulf beachhead. She was hit by two torpedoes launched from the Japanese submarine, the R050. The explosions tore the ship in two causing the entire aft section to sink immediately, leaving the only survivors in the floating bow section. The heavy loss of life included over a hundred US Army soldiers and sixty-six US Navy sailors.

The USS LST-577 earned two battle stars for her heroic WWII service.
