1. St. John's Lutheran Church NRHP Nomination Form. Excerpt:
(Submitted on January 15, 2024, by J.T. Lambrou of New Boston, Michigan.)
The red brick, Gothic-style St. John's Lutheran Church, standing at the intersection of State and Second Streets and facing easterly down State Street, is a prominent visual landmark in Port Hope. The long and com- paratively narrow structure has a steeply pitched gable roof and a symmetrical facade with a centrally posi- tioned, square-plan tower topped by a wood belfry and spire projecting slightly beyond the facade's principal wall plane. Gothic in style, St. John's has stone-trimmed, brick buttresses at the angles and separating the side walls' window bays and pointed-arch windows filled with stained glass. Agable-roof projection at the church's west end contains the chancel. The sanctuary has a plaster ceiling with a flat area in the center flanked on either side by a sloping portion extending to the side wall. A rear gallery supported by round wood columns contains the organ. Two tiers of stained wood pews flanking a central aisle face the chancel, whose original furnishings were replaced in the 1940s with dark stained wood ones of Gothic inspiration. Attached to the south side of the church by a short corridor connector is a cross-gable-roof, one-story wing added in 1981. The wing matches closely the style of the 1899 church.
Significance
St. John's Lutheran Church is the most visible manifestation in Port Hope of the area's large German-American Protestant community dating from the 1860s and 1870s and the construction of the present church in 1899 was one of the most important events in the history of that community. The church building is a typical, but little altered example of late nineteenth-century Lutheran church design in Huron County and Michigan. It replaced the congregation's first church, a frame structure built in 1871 that stood on the same site.
