After completing amphibious and desert warfare training at Port aux Poules, Algeria, First Lieutenant Hoegger and the 338th were committed to action North of the Garigliano River facing the Gustav Line where he was killed-in-action during an attack to take Solacciano, Castellonorato, He was buried in the Sicily Rome American Cemetery & Memorial, Nettuno, Italy.
