The Bald Eagle sculpture stands tall in recognition of US service personnel
from all military branches who served in times of war and peace.

John F. Kennedy said, “The fierce beauty and proud
independence of this great bird aptly symbolizes
the strength and freedom of America.”


In Memory of
William (Bill) P. Roth
January 28, 1921 - April 21, 2016

Bill enlisted with the Iowa Army National Guard October 21, 1940.
His unit was called up to defend our country during WWII.

He was captured in North Africa by the German Army and held as a POW
from February 17, 1943 to April 26, 1945 (800 days).

Bill remained a member of the Iowa Army National Guard after the war,
retiring with the rank of Sergeant First Class on December 22, 1965.

A gift from Bill Roth to the Audubon Lions Club
was used for this tribute.

Bill enlisted in the National Guard on Oct. 1, 1940, and on Feb. 19, 1941, was called to Active Duty. He was a message clerk for HQ 168th Infantry, 34th Red Bull infantry division. Bill was shipped overseas ending up in Northern Africa. During the battle of Kasserine Pass in Tunisia he was captured by the Germans on Feb. 17, 1943. He was transported to Germany where he spent over 26 months as a Prisoner of War. Bill was liberated at Bitterfeld, Germany on April 26, 1945 and transferred to the

The eagle is made of steel, with the head and tail constructed of stainless steel. The eagle has a nine-foot wingspan and is supported by a pole 10 feet in the air. Artist, Arnie Jirsa.
