Regarding Colorado School Of Mines. Marker commemorates the Territorial School of Mines, first location and campus of Colorado School of Mines. Marker language somewhat in error. Campus, established in 1869 by Bishop George Maxwell Randall, was the Colorado University Schools campus of the Episcopal Church. It contained three collegiate institutions: Jarvis Hall (liberal arts, military and grammar school), Matthews Hall (Episcopal divinity school), and Territorial School of Mines (today Colorado School of Mines). Building destroyed by windstorm and rebuilt was Jarvis Hall. Mines building built next to it to west in 1871, school first opened 1873, became Territorial institution 1874, departed campus 1879. Mines building became nucleus of present prison facility, later its hospital, and destroyed by fire 1893. Foundational remains of all three colleges may still remain on site.
