1. The Sorghum Press Marker

Inscription. Sorghum molasses, along with maple syrup and honey were frontier sweeteners of the 1800's. Most communities had a sorghum mill that farmers brought their cane stalks for processing. There the 6-to-12 feet stalks were crushed between rollers powered by an ox or horse walking endlessly in a circle.

The resulting juice was boiled down in large pans to a thick sweet syrup. Poured over pancakes and biscuits, and used to flavor cakes, cookies and candy, this fall activity provided yet another opportunity for the locals to visit while making the 'chore' easier for all who participated.
