Edward "Babe" Heffron
Personal Life
Edward James Heffron, known as "Babe," was born in 1923 in South Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the third of five children, to Anna and Joseph Heffron. Growing up on 2nd Street, he attended Sacred Heart of Jesus School and Church and played football with the Pop Warner organization. At age 18, he enlisted in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper, and fought with 101st Airborne Division throughout Northern Europe during World War II. After the war, Heffron remained in South Philadelphia, working for Publickers, then spending 27 years checking cargo on the waterfront. He married Dolores Morritt Kessler in 1961 and had three step-children, Dolores, Robert and Harry Kesserl, and one daughter, Patricia Heffron Zavrel.
Heffron was featured in the 1992 book, Band of Brothers, and portrayed in the 2001 HBO-mini-series of the same name. After the story was made public, he visited elementary schools nationally to speak about his war experiences. Heffron, one of the last surviving members of Easy Company, died on December 1, 2013.
