Regarding LCPL Nickolas A. Daniels Memorial. Marine Lance Corporal Nickolas A. Daniels died on November 5, 2011, while disarming an improvised explosive device in Helmand province, Afghanistan. The Elmwood Park native, a member of the 1st Marine Division, was 25 years old. Daniels graduated in 2004 from St. Patrick High School, on Chicago's west side about three miles from this memorial, and he was an assistant football coach there after graduation. Daniels enlisted in 2010 and, according to local reports, earned several military awards, including the Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.
