Frederic Charles MacFarlane. Educated at Columbia University. MacFarlane became Dayton's first African American Principal. In 1933 he opened the Paul Laurence Dunbar High School. He successfully achieved accreditation for the school, luring highly credentialed teachers and had Dunbar included in DPS's inter-athletic and scholastic leagues. He incorporated subjects such as radio code and aeronautics in the curriculum, providing African American students with significant skills needed in world war two. As a visionary he left a legacy for generations of youth that would prosper under his educational philosophy of excellence.
