Ammunition Bunker
Photographed By Devry Becker Jones (CC0), January 26, 2024
The Frankford Arsenal long served as a military depot and center for small arms research. It led the way in the development of new types of gunpowder and the production of ammunitions. Powder, ammunition, high explosives and propellant were stored around the site in reinforced bunkers. Most have been torn down, but a few—like this one—still stand as reminders of earlier times.
In 1940, the Frankford Arsenal was the sole producer of military ammunitions in the U.S.

Ammunition bunkers were built to withstand everything from fires to explosions to lightning strikes.
