The transatlantic flight from Londons Heathrow Airport to New York was carrying 243 passengers, including 35 American students returning from a London study abroad program sponsored by Syracuse University. The Lockerbie bombing was an act of terrorism that until Sept. 11, 2001, was the deadliest single attack involving American civilians. A total of 270 people died, including 189 Americans as well as 11 people in Lockerbie. Suspicion for the attack ultimately turned to Libya, setting off an international legal battle that in 2001 resulted in the conviction of one of two suspected Libyan intelligence officers. (Oakwood Cemetery, Troy, Rensselaer County, New York) The flight took off from London's Heathrow Airport bound for New York City. Less than 40 minutes into the flight, the plane exploded in the sky above Lockerbie, Scotland, killing everyone on board and 11 souls on the ground. Evidence established that the bomb had been placed inside a piece of luggage, planted by Libyan intelligence operatives. The transatlantic leg of the route was operated by Clipper Maid of the Seas, a Boeing 747 registered N739PA. Shortly after 19:00 on 21 December 1988, while the aircraft was in flight over the Scottish town of Lockerbie, it was destroyed by a bomb, killing all 243 passengers and 16 crew in what became known as the Lockerbie bombing. Large sections of the aircraft crashed in a residential street in Lockerbie, killing 11 residents.
