Inscription. Edward Reilly Stettinius Jr., 1900-1949, was an American industrialist and statesman, After studies at the Pomfret School and University of Virginia, he entered industry, becoming a vice president of General Motors (1931) and Chairman of the Board of U.S. Steel (1938). Recruited by President Roosevelt to direct the Priorities Division of the Office of Production Management (1941), Mr. Stettinius went on to head the Office of Lend Lease Administration (1941-43). Named Undersecretary of State (1943-44), he presided at the Dumbarton Oaks Conference (1944). He began service as Secretary of State that December. Secretary Stettinius participated in the Yalta Conference and chaired the U.S. delegation to the San Francisco Conference. He resigned his cabinet post to become the first U.S. representative to the United Nations (1945-46) and Rector of the University of Virginia. His life exemplifies the valor, fidelity, and sacrifice this Memorial exists to honor.
By Resolution of the Board of Directors of the National D-Day Memorial Foundation on 17 March 2006, Edward R. Stettinius Parade of the National D-Day Memorial is named in tribute to him.
