Inscription. Since the commencement of World War II, the New Zealand Memorial Cross has been presented to the next of kin of the New Zealand servicemen and women killed during war service, operational service overseas, or who later died of wounds received in the course of either. During the reign of King George VI, the Memorial Cross bore his cipher as shown above. The Memorial Cross as awarded in connection with World War II deaths does not appear in the New Zealand order of wear because it is suspended by a purple ribbon and worn around the neck of the recipient.
