Private Thomas Sletteland

Company C, 1st North Dakota Volunteer Infantry, U.S. Army
On April 12, 1899, three of the five members of Private Sletteland's squad were killed and another severely wounded in an ambush by Philippine rebel forces near Paete, Philippine Islands. Sletteland single-handedly held off three further attacks by enemy forces. He then carried his surviving comrade off the battlefield, returning to retrieve the bodies of the other men.

Thomas Sletteland was born in Bergen, Norway, on the 18th of February 1872 and enlisted in the United States Army. Not much is known about his emigration to the US or when he enlisted but we do know that his actions in Luzon during the Philippine–American War, with Company C of the 1st North Dakota Infantry, earned him the Medal of Honor.
