Inscription. From 1884 until the powder mills closed in 1921, this building, and a now missing brick annex, housed three steam boilers and a Corliss steam engine. When water in the Brandywine was too low to operate the mills, the steam engine supplied power to machinery. Steam was piped to "Big Mary," a large glaze mill nearby, where black powder was tumbled and dried in steam-heated barrels. After the installation of dynamos in 1891, the Power Plant also generated electricity for the powder yards, prior to the construction of a hydroelectric plant.
